Mellinda Alexis obtained her Bachelor’s degree from CUNY John Jay College for Criminal Justice where she majored in Law & Society and double minored in Africana Studies and Sociology. During her undergraduate studies from 2013-2017, Mellinda began interning as a clerical aide with the New York City Police Department- Brooklyn Court Section each summer. While working with the NYPD-Brooklyn Court Section, Mellinda assisted NYPD Officers and the District Attorney’s Office with filing, preparing and processing “breakdowns” for desk appearance tickets and accompanying the Brooklyn assistant district attorney’s to Court appearances. During her sophomore year of undergrad, Mellinda began her first part-time legal assistant position at a Medical Malpractice/Legal Malpractice Defense law firm in lower Manhattan. While at that firm, Mellinda’s day to day tasks consisted of, filing motions, drafting stipulations, appeals, e-filing, managing the examination before trial calendar, scheduling client’s for independent medical examinations, processing HIPAA authorizations, making follow up calls to facilities regarding request for medical records, and editing attorney quarterly report. After graduation, Mellinda obtained a paralegal position at a Personal Injury/Police Misconduct Plaintiff law firm in Brooklyn where she spent one year.
 
While here at Derek Smith Law Group, Mellinda uses her experience to assist her attorney and works diligently to get clients their just due. In addition to her legal experience, Mellinda has a strong background in customer service and has been able to maintain a good rapport with clients; providing them with detailed and accurate case status updates.
 
Mellinda is vehement about the law and more importantly compassionate about helping people. Mellinda aspires to become an attorney in the public interest area of practice. Mellinda always puts the client’s first.
 
Mellinda is fluent in speaking, reading and writing Haitian-Creole and conversational in French.
