Ilana Glazer, Sure You Don’t want to be Sexually Harassed?
PHILADELPHIA, PA – October 18, 2017, the Broad City star Ilana Glazer, posted a #MeToo post of her own. Inspired by Viola Davis’s and Trace Lysette’s #MeToo posts, Glazer did not hold back.
In her post, Glazer shared that she has been sexually harassed “countless times” in school and in nearly every position she has worked, whether she was working as a waitress or as a showrunner. Her post even mentioned that she was sexually harassed by “A creepy ass doctor just last year and filed a complaint with NYC.”
Luckily, at the time the men sexually harassed her when she was a showrunner, so she had the power to hold them accountable. The post continued: “I’ve fired a couple of dudes– one background actor and one sound guy. I was asked ‘are you sure?’ HM Okay. Yeah. Lemme think a sex– yeah I’m fucking sure. Cuz getting sexually harassed seems to be a constant, but having the opportunity to do something about it is rare.
Not every victim holds the power to do justice and to fire their harassers on the spot, but that does not mean victims have no other powers of their own. Moreover, in many instances, the harasser is actually the one with the power so there may be a valid fear of retaliation for making a complaint or the power wielder easily avoids liability. However, there are numerous laws in place to protect individuals from sexual harassment and discrimination in the workplace.
Under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it is unlawful for an individual to harass or discriminate against someone because of that person’s sex. Under this federal protection, an employer is liable for sexual harassment when a supervisor or manager predicates job benefits, such as a promotion, or increased screen time, on whether the employee acquiesces to the supervisor or manager’s request for sexual favors. A company will be held liable if an employee reports the behavior and the employer is negligent, or if the corporation retaliates against the employee who reports the sexually harassing behavior.
Likewise, for individuals living in the State of Pennsylvania, or the City of Philadelphia, there are additional protections that go beyond Title VII.
